Birmingham metro-area credit unions were featured in a story in the Birmingham News. The story looked at the latest financial institution ratings for area banks and credit unions. The 17 Birmingham area credit unions outperformed the banks. UAB finance professor Andreas Rauterkus pointed out that credit unions loans were less risky and therefore helped credit unions have a lower loan-loss ratio than banks. The story centered around Alabama Telco Credit Union and its ninth branch that was just opened. Alabama Telco CEO Linda Cencula told the paper that her credit union's assets grew by $70 million last year.
