Ted Deutch's victory for Florida's U.S. House seat from the 19th district was significant for credit unions. In the past, Deutch has been a credit union supporter. Deutch, a former state Senator, will fill the seat vacated by Democrat Robert Wexler, who left Congress earlier this year to become president of the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace. Wexler had served in the House since 1997. Republican Ed Lynch also challenged for Wexler's seat.
"People really want a congressman that works for them and focuses on the nation's concerns first and foremost," Deutch told the Palm Beach Post News. "It's my hope that in some small way I might be part of the solution to ratcheting down some of the partisanship."
The LSCU and CUNA's Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) supported Deutch with $10,000 in financial support. Deutch won with over 64 percent of the vote.
