When Southeastern Credit Union Foundation (SECUF) first partnered with the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (NFCDCU) it was obvious that there were numerous credit unions either low-income designated and/or community development financial institution certified or eligible but doing nothing with it. With the assistance of the Federation, the SECUF decided to host regional workshops to showcase the benefits of these programs, but also grant funding and resources available to credit unions for better serving their underserved areas. With the economic constraints placed on America’s families, credit unions are poised to be the better financial solution - it’s the League and SECUF’s obligation to bring forward these opportunities to better equip credit unions with the tools to serve their local communities.
The League recently interviewed Federation Membership Director Pablo DeFilippi about what it means for credit unions to become low-income designated, how to obtain designations, what credit unions can gain from the workshop, and examples of credit unions with these designations that are helping their local communities.
