Across the country, 348 credit unions across the country helped nearly 170,000 kids save almost $25 million in the 2010 National Youth Savings challenge. Among the more impressive statistics is the fact that 10,385 kids opened new accounts. This year’s results average out to $147 deposited per child. Last year’s $26+ million savings total averaged $190 deposited per child, up from $87 per child in the 2004 inaugural year.... More

New and enhanced programs this year allow low-income credit unions to compete for grants to provide financial education; offer student internships and create jobs at credit unions; and pursue community outreach. Birmingham-based America's First Federal Credit Union, created to serve steelworkers in the 1930s, took its rivalry with banks to a humorous level this year with a series of television commercials created by advertising veteran Paul Crawford.
Crawford, president and creative director of Scout Branding at 216 29th St. South, came up with a campaign for America's First that pokes fun at bank fees, which critics say are too high. The five 30-second spots, mostly filmed in Los Angeles using unknown actors, have aired several times on Alabama television stations where the credit union has a presence....
