Job Description:

Purpose:
The Director of Accounting oversees all aspects of the Accounting Department(s) and leads the day-to-day operations ensuring efficient, accurate, and compliant financial accounting and reporting using generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) compliant with appropriate NCUA regulations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs accounting functions by communicating, coordinating, and coaching direct reports to ensure efficient operations.  Including overseeing the hiring, direction, mentoring, motivation, and evaluation of all Accounting Department staff.

  • Ensures financial reports, call report and other regulatory reporting is prepared timely an in accordance with GAAP and NCUA/OFR regulations.
  • Ensures timely, complete reconciliation of general ledger accounts and subsidiary records to ensure accurate reporting of our financial results and to identify process problems in accounting or other business units.  This includes regular reviews of reconciliations.
  • Monitors and analyzes monthly operating results against budget, and proactively communicates and addresses budgetary issues and variances.
  • Collaborates with other departments/operations to coordinate design and implementation of operational updates or enhancements in order to maintain operations consistently and accomplish SCCU objectives.
  • Approves and compiles schedules requested for audits/exams/IRS performed by internal and external regulators/auditors to provide support for audit/exam/IRS interpretations.  Researches and responds to IRS notices and audit/exam findings.
  • Prepares required tax returns and census information and interacts with various taxing authorities.
  • Ensures maintenance of a current department procedure manuals and monitors established internal controls related to the Accounting Department to assure proper compliance with procedures.
  • Monitors and researches new accounting developments from authoritative bodies (FASB, AICPA, NCUA, OFR); identify any financial impact to the Credit Union. Provides appropriate accounting for merger and acquisition activity.
  • Assists in the preparation and review of the annual operating and capital budgets.

Education/Experience Required:

Education and Training:
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, or finance required.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA) required.


Additional Comments:

Prior Experience:
8+ years previous Accounting or Auditing experience with 3+ years of leadership experience required.
Previous management experience in a Credit Union/Community Banking or Financial Services environment required.

  • Must possess the ability to establish credibility and make sound judgments.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of employees
    and outside vendors as well as the ability to delegate, focus, and direct individual work activity as needed.
  • Strong writing skills including the ability to prepare financial highlights and extensive written documentation on financial reports.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, project management, coaching and motivational skills.
  • Knowledge of Windows Office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel with knowledge of Prologue and Fiserv DNA preferred.
  • Experienced in complex spreadsheets and financial systems.

Physical Demands:
Work requires light or a low amount of physical exertion. The need for physical stamina and endurance is of minimum or low significance. Body movement usually involves sitting and intermittent walking.
