Succession Planning

Facilitated by: Michael Hudson

Ideal for: CEO/management, board members, and HR professionals.
Few things are more important to the long term success of your credit union than making sure that you are developing the knowledge, skills and abilities of those who will lead it in the future. Defining what succession planning is and what it isn’t for your credit union is step one. From there we will explore alternative pathways to developing the capacity of your team so that future leaders will emerge prepared to step up and guide the credit union when the time comes. Special attention will be paid to the application of these approaches to your board of directors.

Participants in this session will learn:

  • The three things your credit union must do to create an effective succession plan for board and staff;
  • How to design, develop, and implement a capacity development program that creates the future leaders your credit union will need; and
  • How to overcome the common obstacles and objections that arise when implanting a succession plan for board and staff members.

What Previous Participants Have Learned
Russell’s term as Chairman of the Board was approaching, but he was concerned that he had not yet solved the problem of succession in a way that made him comfortable about the future. The subject had been addressed in all three of the strategic planning sessions during his term, and some initial actions had been completed, yet still he wondered, “Was it enough?” By attending the MCUL webinar on succession planning, Russell gained new insights that helped him see the gaps in the current plan more clearly. More importantly, he gained specific information that he was able to take back and share with his fellow board members and the leaders of his credit union so that a thorough succession strategy could be defined and implemented.
