Five Star employees give back, illustrate CU difference
Each year during its Employee Forum, Five Star Credit Union employees choose a charity to support, and this year’s benefit raised funds for Dothan-based SARCOA Area Agency on Aging. Employees raised $533 dollars. Five Star matched the total to make the final donation $1,066. When the check was presented, Terri Francis, SARCOA director of community resources, said the donation will provide meals and in-home services to homebound seniors in the Wiregrass area.
For the second year in a row, Five Star also asked employees to bring a donation to the Employee Forum. Staff brought towels and socks to donate to the Dothan-based House of Ruth. In total, staff brought in 95 towels and 250 pair of socks. After dropping off the towels and socks, Deondra Smith, House of Ruth victim advocate, said that the donation helps women and children that are escaping abusive situations. Many come to the House of Ruth with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Sometimes they are barefoot. Just putting on a pair of socks can be comforting for them.
On a day when employees came together for a full day of education, they made sure that two agencies in their community had the resources they needed to help seniors and those in abusive situations. Once again, Five Star employees showed why a credit union is much more than a financial institution.
Tampa Bay Chapter of CUs hosts 26th annual Golf Classic fundraiser
The 26th annual Golf Classic Tampa Chapter of Credit Unions was held March 8 at Top Golf Tampa, making the fundraiser fun for serious golfers, occasional golfers, and those who have never picked up a club.
Participants enjoyed great opportunities to mingle with fellow credit unions and business partners at the benefit for the Florida Credit Union Political Action Committee and the Carolyn Parslow Memorial Scholarship. Organizing the event were members of the Golf Classic Committee Frank Fortner, Ken Cameron, and Dawn Dahlke.
Young Professionals crashed 2019 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference
Young professionals in the credit union industry, attending as “Crashers,” joined thousands of credit union advocates for the 2019 Credit Union National Association Governmental Affairs Conference. This year marked the 10th Crash the GAC with the Cooperative Trust, which won the Herb Wegner Award for Outstanding Program in 2017, led by Filene Research Institute.
In celebration of this milestone, the Cooperative Trust and CUNA brought 100 crashers to the conference, representing every state in the nation. These next generation leaders participated in conversations on the future and sustainability of the credit union industry while broadening their horizons on the impact of credit unions.
